EastEnders stalwart Wendy Richard has died at the age of 65, after her breast cancer returned and spread through her body.

Her agent Kevin Francis said: "She was incredibly brave and retained her sense of humour right to the end."

Wendy played Pauline Fowler in the BBC1 soap for 21 years, but first rose to fame as Miss Brahms in Are You Being Served? in the 1970s.

She revealed that she was suffering from cancer last year, and in January she was told that it had made an aggressive return - spreading to her right kidney and bones.

Like Jade Goody, she brought forward the date of her wedding when she heard the bad news - and tied the knot with long-term partner John Burns in a civil ceremony last October.

Wendy passed away in the Harley Street Clinic in London, with her husband by her side.
