Simon Cowell is on a mission to remake Saturday Night Fever with Zac Efron as his leading man.

Music mogul Cowell has reportedly spent weeks in negotiations with film producer Robert Stigwood who currently owns the rights to the original movie.

High School Musical star Efron is Cowell's top choice to play the role of Tony Manero, originally made famous by John Travolta.

But Simon may have some persuading to do as Zac recently pulled out of a remake of 80s movie Flashdance, saying he had had enough of musicals.

The X Factor and Britain's Got Talent judge also has his heart set on getting top producer Timbaland to remix the movie's classic theme tune.

Stayin' Alive, originally recorded by the Bee Gees, could get the hip hop beats treatment if Cowell gets his way.

A source told The Sun: "Robert [Stigwood] was keen to get some assurances the original wouldn't be completely butchered before he agreed to the deal.

"Simon has been drawing up a list of people he wants to get involved. When that meets Robert's expectations, the contracts will be signed."

We say Simon should go for the lead role himself if Zac won't play ball!
