Actress Brittany Murphy managed to get her entire neighbourhood in a bit of a flap this week.

According to TMZ.com, in the early hours of Wednesday morning, the panicked star was heard screaming and yelling about hearing gunfire outside her Hollywood home.

At around 2.30am, concerned neighbours began to get seriously worried by Brittany's wailing and called the police.

Why, if she heard gunshots, Brittany herself didn't place a call to the emergency services is anybody's guess, but by the time police arrived on the scene, the actress was apparently in a frantic state on her balcony.

Police searched the property but found no evidence of a weapon nor any indication of any weapons having been used.

And there's a very good reason for that. The cops later put the loud bangs that Murphy heard down to a noisy generator.

Which leaves us wondering exactly what Brittany was up to when she started hearing things and screaming at two in the morning.

Her representative has yet to comment.
