Footballer Theo Walcott has splashed out £140,000 on a Ferrari for his girlfriend Melanie Slade's 21st birthday.

The Arsenal star, 20, who earns around £60k a week, bought the new California model for Mel to replace the VW Beetle he bought her three years ago.

The Sun quoted a source as saying: "Melanie is over the moon. She loves the car and has even got a personalised number plate for it.

"She was scared of driving it at first, but she took it for a spin in London to get rid of her nerves."

Theo is expected to have to pay around £20k just in insurance for the powerful 193mph motor.

Mel is not the typical WAG, in that she shunned the limelight to concentrate on her university studies - but she has recently signed a deal to promote Helly Hansen clothing.
