Kate Winslet at the 2009 OscarsOscar-winning actress Kate Winslet has accepted a £25,000 libel payout from the Daily Mail over allegations that she was telling porkies about her fitness regime.

The settlement figure was agreed at London's High Court earlier today, according to reports by BBC News.

Kate announced that she was suing the newspaper in May, over an article published in January, which accused her of misleading the public about her exercise habits.

Though she was not present at the hearing, Winslet released this statement: "I am delighted that the Mail have apologised for making false allegations about me.

"I was particularly upset to be accused of lying about my exercise regime and felt that I had a responsibility to request an apology in order to demonstrate my commitment to the views that I have always expressed about body issues, including diet and exercise."

The offending article suggested that Winslet had been dishonest in an interview with Elle magazine in which she claimed she relied solely on workout DVDs rather than going to the gym.

Her statement concluded: "I strongly believe that women should be encouraged to accept themselves as they are, so to suggest that I was lying was an unacceptable accusation of hypocrisy."

The Daily Mail printed a retraction and an apology in September.
