New Moon - the latest film from the Twilight series - has set a new box office record by earning a gigantic £16.42 million overnight in the U.S. and Canada alone.Debuting at on Thursday night, the movie took more than the previous record for midnight takings set by Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince, which only took £13.75 million.
3,514 cinemas across North America stayed open late to accommodate the die-hard fans of the franchise - made up mostly of adolescent girls desperate to get their teeth into a new installement of the series and see more of heart-throb star Robert Pattinson.
Many fans had to line up for hours to see the second adaptation of Stephanie Meyer's vampire novels.
Previous top overnight earners are The Dark Knight (£11.56 million), Star Wars: Episode III (£10.5 million) and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (£10 million).
