New Moon - the latest film from the Twilight series - has set a new box office record by earning a gigantic £16.42 million overnight in the U.S. and Canada alone.

Debuting at on Thursday night, the movie took more than the previous record for midnight takings set by Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince, which only took £13.75 million.

3,514 cinemas across North America stayed open late to accommodate the die-hard fans of the franchise - made up mostly of adolescent girls desperate to get their teeth into a new installement of the series and see more of heart-throb star Robert Pattinson.

Many fans had to line up for hours to see the second adaptation of Stephanie Meyer's vampire novels.

Previous top overnight earners are The Dark Knight (£11.56 million), Star Wars: Episode III (£10.5 million) and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (£10 million).
