Morrissey performing earlier this yearSmiths icon Morrissey has never really been the kind of celeb you would associate with a cheery smile and wave to passing fans.

So when the 50-year-old singer told Kirsty Young on Radio Four that he'd had thoughts of suicide in the past, we have to admit to being not entirely surprised.

Appearing on Desert Island Discs, Morrissey revealed that he considered self-destruction to be an "honourable" act and, when asked if he had ever thought of controlling his own death, replied: "Yes, I have. It's an act of great control and I understand people who do it."

With this in mind, the singer insisted that he would take a bed to the desert island as his luxury item.

"I would either take a bed because I like to go to bed, or a bag of sleeping pills because I might want to make a quick exit."

But surely a happy, comfortable relationship might take the edge off all the misery?

"I don't want to settle down until I'm carried out feet first," says the Smiths frontman.

"I don't want to be any kind of a happy couple with a photograph on the television set. I'm happier with horses."

Perhaps not.
